Description: | Founded in 1899, Emidio Pepe hit its modern stride in 1964, when Emidio, grandson of the original owner, also Emidio, assumed control of the estate. However, "modern" is a very relative term at this Abruzzo winery, which practices winemaking that has remained almost unchanged since the estate's beginning. The estate's 37 acres, tucked in the hills of northern Abruzzo between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, have never seen a single chemical fertilizer or treatment, so the move to becoming wholly biodynamic in 2005 was an easy one. Helmed by daughters Daniela and Sofia Pepe, the Emidio Pepe team defers to nature and abides by tradition in growing their grapes and in making their wine; the estate grows only three indigenous grape varietals — Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano, and Pecorino — and the team does everything by hand, from sorting grapes to pressing them (and they even gently stomp the Trebbiano with their feet)! Emidio Pepe uses no wood, preferring to ferment in cement and age the wine in bottle, and the estate uses no additives at all, not yeasts, not enzymes, not even sulfites. While Emidio Pepe makes wines from its younger vines, they aren't exported, and the estate ages wines intended for export for a longer time to ensure both their purity and their integrity. |
