| Description: | Field Blend: 40% Nebbiolo, 40% Croatina, 5% Vespolina and 9 other local varieties including some whites. Decanter 91 Points - "Aromas of marasca cherry, red plum and violets. Medium-bodied, with lively acidity, round tannins and very good persistence. Lovely blend of more than a dozen local varieties from very old vines that offers excellent complexity and marvellous charm. This is something of a love letter from [proprietor] Knzli to the old days of Alto Piemonte.". This is Le Piane's everyday red from the hills of the Boca area, vibrant and lighter in body than their other bottlings, and made only in stainless steel. They are a benchmark winery for the Alta Piemonte region in the foothills of the Alps. The fruit comes from an old vine-training system that dates back millenia called "Maggiorina," wherein 4 fruit-bearing branches of a single vine extend in 4 directions with the support of chestnut poles. While they have 40-100-year-old vines, there are also new plantings of selected clones from the old vineyards that serve as a supply for more 'youthful fruit.' |
