Description: | As the weather meanders toward Fall, following the calendar's predictable steps, we start to think about the flavors and fare of the season. While we enjoy our red wines year round, there's something a little more 'extra' about enjoying a wine that pairs so well with Fall fare. Monastrell (perhaps better known to some as MourvĂŠdre ) is a grape that does well in warmer climates, which makes it a natural fit for eastern Spain, in general, and Yecla, in particular (considered by some the 'home of Monastrell in Spain'). You'll also find the grape widely used in the south of France (RhĂ´ne and Provence) and a few other areas in the world (California, Washington, South Africa, South Australia, New South Wales). This Monastrell from Bodegas Castaño is a beautiful, user-friendly, wallet-friendly, absolutely delicious wine. From the get-go, this is a charmer. The nose offers wondrous scents of raspberries, black cherries, balsa wood, dark florals, underbrush and a touch of wood spice. The palate continues the charm offensive with rich viscosity in the mouthfeel category aided by flavors of mixed cherries and berries (very concentrated and rich-- like fruit leather) that are kept supple by excellent body. Monastrell is known for its tannic properties, which is showcased nicely here as it helps to rein in and balance the bright, fresh fruit flavors. The lengthy finish offers flecks of black cherry and cola nut with support of minerality and spice notes. RamĂłn Castaño Santa, founder of Bodegas Castaño, started making his first wines in bulk back in 1950. Pioneer in the use of the Monastrell grape, he extended the family heritage with the purchase of new vineyard sites. With the gradual incorporation of their three children, RamĂłn, Juan Pedro and Daniel Castaño, the true innovation started and with it, the expansion to international markets. They state, "One of the key factors to achieve the quality of our wines and our renowned customer service is the sum of a unique scenery for Monastrell, our team's talents in the cellar, plus the effort and involvement of every single person at Castaño." This wine showcases quite well the quality that the Castaño team is putting out. That this is 'An Eric Solomon Selection' is another clue to the authenticity and quality of the wine (we are big fans of the wines Eric Solomon and team import!). Winemaker's notes : "Of an intense cherry-red colour. It blooms rich aromas of ripe plum on a bakery background that also shows elegant balsamic notes. Light and complex, its palate is delicate, soft, but equally rich and juicy. Good balance.". Enjoy with soups, stews, chili, game, BBQ, charcuterie, etc. |
