Description: Wine maker notes Farmed from vineyards along the slopes of Mount Diablo, winemaker Kyle Mizuno and consulting winemaker Aaron Pott have intentionally crafted an elegant, dry rose to appreciate at every occasion from the mundane to the extraordinary. Our hero, an image by artist Tony Hernandez tells the story of rose, once an outcast of the wine world now recognized as a crown prince. Producer The Vineyards The inaugural release of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon heralds from the high elevation Mayacamas Mountains north of St. Helena in the Red Hills Ava. Lying between 2000 and 2600 feet in elevation, these mountain vineyards are the result of the same volcanic and tectonic processes that formed the terroir of many of the North Coast's classic regions. As one would expect of mountain viticulture, elevation moderates temperature extremes, allowing for a long growing season that results in complex flavor development. The intensity of flavors is magnified by vine stress from well-drained, iron-rich vineyards littered with black obsidian, quartz crystal, and volcanic gravel. As California winemakers look beyond the more established growing regions, the confluence of site, soil, elevation, and climate will undoubtedly make the Red Hills Ava one of the great appellations of California wine country. The Winemaker Studying oenology at the University of California, Davis, Aaron Pott delved into all aspects of the theory of winemaking, including practical application by working part-time in the research laboratory at Robert Mondavi Winery. He completed his education with a master's degree in Viticulture from the Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, France. Pott immediately took the position of assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyard, under Winemaker John Kongsgaard. It was at Newton-under the wing of his first great mentor-that Pott would be introduced to Michel Rolland. Pott worked for nearly six years making wine in France before returning to the States to take a position with Beringer Wine Estates. In November 2012, Pott was named "Winemaker of the Year" by the highly-acclaimed, Food & Wine magazine. The Artist Tony Hernandez began painting and drawing when he was seven years old. Although encouraged to pursue his talent by art teachers, Hernandez decided to study architecture, a more acceptable career path according to his family. While studying architecture, he realized that he was more interested in building structures than designing them. After working in construction for three years, he decided to turn his dream of being an artist into a reality. For Hernandez, "Having the time to paint and to think and conceptualize about what I wanted to paint had become vital." He has been a professional painter for nearly thirty years.
