| Description: | We are amazed by the absolute quality of this Tinto blend and how much value the imbiber receives-- talk about bang for the buck! A blend of 65% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder in Syrah, Malbec, and Tempranillo, this 2018 Tinto received 92 Points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (November, 2021) and highlights the terroir of the Navarra region in Northern Spain. Juan Magaa, now entering his sixth decade of proprietorship, could easily rest on his laurels as one of the elder statesman and original visionaries of Navarra. Instead, he's making some of the most interesting wines of his career. The nose is filled with red berries, scrub brush, peppery/savory notes and hints of rose petal. The rich fruits continue upon tasting with cherries and blueberries balanced by mellow tannins and a nice level of acidity. Subtle notes of scrub oak and hillside brush with flecks of fruit leather make for a lengthy, tasty finish. Really a banger of a bottle-- impeccable form with ripe forward fruits that grow toward the mid-palate with plums and blue fruits joining the forementioned berries. The finish adds more savory, earthy elements but the fruits are the star of this show (supported by a well-structured cast, of course!). Wine Advocate 92 Points - "The 2018 Barn de Magaa is a red blend produced with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from their oldest vineyards, looking for a fresher wine that expresses the limestone soils from their vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and had a short maceration at no more than 28 degrees Celsius. It matured in second use French oak barrels for 12 months. It has a bright ruby color and an expressive nose of berries and herbs, very spicy and with a medium-bodied palate and polished tannins." |
