Prager Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten Stockkultur

Prager Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten Stockkultur

Gruner Veltliner

Vintage: 2016
Description: Review On average, reported Toni Bodenstein, in 2016 he picked fruit at a full gram greater acidity and three-quarters of a percent lower potential alcohol than he had 2015, which are important reasons why his outstanding 2016 collection, while not stinting on ripeness or even richness, comes off as something of a welcome throwback to years of yore. But what a superb collection of Gruner Veltliner Bodenstein has rendered from this vintage! - From Austria's Riesling & Gruner Veltliner: 2016's Challenges Met (Dec 2018) by David Schildknecht. Wine maker notes These may well be the oldest vines in existence in the Wachau, planted in 1938. The Bodensteins acquired this vineyard and released their first wine from here in 2005. Single stalk trained, "Stockkultur", in the old style, because these terraces are uneven and would never allow for a wire trained system anyway. Maintaining and repairing these old stake trained vines is a labor of love. In this wine are the complex aromas and deep savory characteristics only found in vines decades old planted to these infertile soils. Producer In 1983, the now retired Franz Prager, cofounded the Vinea Wachau association, an organization dedicated to preserving the quality and culture of Wachau wines, while promoting Wachau"s image beyond Austrian borders. The marriage of Vienna-born Toni Bodenstein, to Franz"s daughter, Ilse, ushered in a sweeping renaissance at the Prager winery. These changes not only affected the way Prager thought, but also how Wachauers thought about their vineyards and their work as winemakers.
