Tenuta di Ghizzano Il Ghizzano

Tenuta di Ghizzano Il Ghizzano

Sangiovese

Description: Wine maker notes This is the wine that "introduces" the estate into wine bars, wine stores and restaurants all over the world. It is made from Sangiovese grapes with a small percentage of Merlot, grown mainly in our "Santa Maria" and "Il Monte" vineyards. The philosophy behind Il Ghizzano is that of offering consumers a fresh, fruity, easy to drink wine featuring all the sweetness of the local Sangiovese. Producer Our family, according to Repetti's famous dictionary of Tuscan places and place names, arrived at Ghizzano towards the end of the 14th century. The vine and the olive tree were, from the start, the heart of the agricultural work of the various farms which make up today's estate. For centuries production continued on a traditional basis. A sure and solid level of quality maintained by "things done in a proper way", as the saying goes in this part of Tuscany. But without any desire to dare, to raise the bar to a higher level. During the decade of the 1980's the agriculture of our area, in particular the viticulture, entered into a phase of serious crisis. Over-production of grapes led to low-level wines. Ridiculously low prices did not even cover the costs of production. Many of our neighbors ripped out their vineyards, and some even finished by selling their properties. It was then that our father, Pierfrancesco, decided to swim against the current, to invest in the vineyards and in the cellar to raise quality to a higher level. The objective, at the time, was to produce a "serious " wine, perhaps in small quantities, but one which could face the challenges of the market. The "veneroso": The Great Wine Of Our Ancestor Veneroso, our first bottled wine, was born in 1985 and bore the name of our forebear, Veneroso Venerosi, the first to dedicate himself heart and soul to the countryside. The old vineyards of the 1970's, with a mere 2500 vines per hectare (1000 per acre), have grown into the current 20 hectares (50 acres), 85% replanted, the first in 1989 with 4500 vines per hectare, the second from 1999 to 2003 with 6000 vines per hectare, and the last in 2006 with 5000 plants per hectare.
