Description: | Our July Wine of the Month hails from Alicante Dop ( denominaciones de origen protegidas, similar to how the French designate appellations), located in the province of Alicante. We are constantly amazed at the quality and especially the value coming out of Spain, in general. I've lost count of how many times we have touted these bang-for-the-buck beauties that overdeliver in terms of quality to price. Al-Muvedre continues the winning record for sub-$10 Spanish wines! This is a charmer and an ideal summer red-- you can even give it a slight chill to serve alongside your favorite summer grill treats. The man behind this (and many other greats wines) bottling is Telmo RodrĂŹguez, who is known and recognized for his role in bringing a wine's place of origin, its terroir, to the forefront of importance in Spanish wine. " Everyone knows Telmo," stated Luis Gutierrez in the July 2020 Wine Advocate. "He's key in what is happening in Spain right now." James Suckling noted his importance back in 2015: " Telmo RodrĂŹguez is one of the leading figures in the production of quality wines in Spain.". The grapes for Al-Muvedre are planted on parcels in the villages of Monovar and Villena and on soils that are predominantly calcareous with sandy composition and also gravelly with rounded pebbles on the surface-- soils poor in organic matter and that yield a very low production (the grapes have to work harder and produce more flavor !). 100% Monastrell. These low-density bush-pruned vines are manually harvested in boxes. Fermentation is with native yeasts and aging is in stainless steel tanks. Perhaps Telmo's greatest achievement, along with partner and fellow winemaker Pablo Eguzkiza, lies in recovering old, almost forgotten vineyards. Ancient wine growing techniques have been used. They introduced the age-old way of planting densities; grafted all the rare varieties from old vineyards and farmed the vines as bush vines as was always done in the past. The nose starts with bright ripe spicy fruit, think peppered plums and mixed purple fruit, as layers of riverbed minerality and wet garden florals add some breadth and depth. I love looking back at notes to write these reviews-- my first note upon tasting: Wow ! The ripe fruit continues on the palate with ripe red berries, more plum and mixed currants. Excellent structure and vibrant acidity keep the wine lively and not heavy nor cloying. The finish adds a touch of forest floor and a reiteration of fruit. This is a beautiful rendition of Monastrell that's fresh and vibrant and ideal for the season. Wow!! |
