| Description: | This lithe-but-concentrated, minerally firm and fresh red is an exceptional example of the regionally-specific Baga variety, which thrives in the Atlantic climate of coastal Portugal! It's a contrast to the more commonly exported, darkly-toned, structured wines of the Douro, or rich and soft wines of the Alentejo. Winery Notes - "Crystalline appearance and a fantastic and open red ruby color. It reveals the aroma of the iodine and clay minerality of the variety and cherry notes as well as a fine floral and herbaceous freshness. In the mouth it has a unique freshness, with silky tannins, hints of fruit, salty and spicy notes and an Atlantic acidity that supports the wine through a very long finish. This wine was born of the centenarian Baga vines that we found in Bairrada. It is a limited production of a specific parcel of our vineyard in the Valley of Cadoicos. In this clay area the old vines have an imposing size and the grapes hold a unique freshness. We decided to make a different wine of this micro-terroir. A fresher, less matured wine, thinking about the purity and elegance of the variety. V Puro vineyards are located in the Cadoios valley, near Mealhada. The climate is purely Atlantic, the vineyards are just 30 km distance from the sea, without any natural barriers. The soils are clay-limestone, with some clayey and deeper plots and others more calcareous and exposed. The vines are mostly centennial and here the old Baga or Poeirinho grape dominates. Viticulture is all manual since these old vines are impossible to mechanize. In Baga reds we use a variable percentage of whole bunches with stems. Some reds are fermented in lagares with foot treading and others in oak vats, with little forced extraction. They age in barrels and vats, usually for 12 to 24 months before being bottled.". Nuno is an untethered vine hunter, scouring the full country with the pure heart of a vigneron unlocking the core of any realized terroir. When he does root himself eventually, it is in agreement with the old-timers, often hiding a few rows, for sure off the beaten path. Certainly nothing is contiguous. In fact, he often has to travel into separate regions to satisfy the hunt. The reward is worthy of his tireless efforts, since his goal is the original clones of the indigenous varietals, shared and planted before the government mandated nursery clones were dispersed for larger co-op production decades ago. Exact location is perhaps not as important. It is these old timers that give wisdom and complexity to his wines." |
