Chateau D'Yquem Sauternes (Sauternes, Bordeaux, France) [library Wine] - [rp 90]

80% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc from Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Vintage: 1970
Winery: Chateau d'Yquem
Description: Often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (lvmh) in 1999. Chateau d'Yquem is located on the highest hill in Sauternes. Wines from Château d'Yquem are characterized by their complexity, concentration and sweetness. A relatively high acidity helps to balance the sweetness of the wine. The 110-hectare vineyard, classified as a Premier Cru Classe superieur, is planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Only fully botrytized fruit is picked by the 150 highly skilled pickers and yields are so low that each vine produces only one glass of wine. With proper care, a bottle will keep for a century or more. During this time, the fruity overtones will gradually fade and integrate with more complex secondary and tertiary flavors. When Chateau d'Yquem is first bottled, it shows a dark yellow or gold hue. With aging, the color changes and begins getting darker. 40 year old d'Yquems could resemble caramel, while bottles twice that age, could have the color of dark coffee. Something else to consider, when d'Yquem is young, not more than 25 years after the vintage, the flavors will better resemble honey, drenched tropical fruit. As the wine ages further, often those yellow tropical fruit flavors fade and tasters experience flavors of caramel, burnt toast, spice and creme brulee.
