| Description: | Wine maker notes Made from thirty year old vines, Grand Mouton's second wine is very fresh, but also fairly soft. It has the musky character typical of old vines grown on siliceous rock and pairs beautifully with starters, fish pate, and goat's cheese. Producer Our estates are located in the heart of the Nantes vineyard region, in three well-known communes between the Sevre and Maine rivers. Grand Mouton*, our main estate, has 23 hectares of vines in single block on slopes near the Maine River in Saint Fiacre. This exceptional terroir is composed of gneiss with two different kinds of mica, garnet, and amphibolite. The oldest vines were planted in 1937. Our various Muscadet cuvees -Louis Metaireau Petit Mouton*, Grand Mouton*, 10°5, One, and Premier Jour - as well as our vin de pays -Grand Mouton* Musque- come from here. Our smaller estates are in the communes of La Haye-Fouassiere -cuvee Mlm and Maisdon-sur-Sevre -cuvee Carte Noire. In order to preserve the old vines for many years, all the grapes are harvested by hand. After spending the winter on its lees, each vat is tasted blind and a decision is made as to which cuvee it will become. Bottling takes place in the spring according to the age-old sur lie method. In the spring after the vintage, the wine is drawn off from its lees with as little handling as possible, and no filtration. In keeping with this tradition, a part of the wine is bottled by natural gravity flow. The Louis Métaireau Grand Mouton name represents our finest wine. |
