Chateau Pavie Macquin

Chateau Pavie Macquin

Bordeaux Blend

Vintage: 2011
Description: Premier Grand Cru Classé. 94 Pts - James Suckling. This is rich and concentrated with loads of fruit and ripe tannins. Full body and a long, long finish. Beautiful intensity. Better in 2017 but so juicy and drinkable now. Nice and balanced for the vintage. 93 Pts - Wine Spectator. This has lovely energy, with the vintage's up-front briary feel pulling the flavors of plum sauce, blackberry coulis and cherry preserves along while anise, apple wood and fruitcake notes fill in behind them. Offers a solid, juicy feel through the finish, revealing floral and incense hints in reserve. Rock-solid.—Non-blind Pavie Macquin vertical (December 2014). Best from 2018 through 2028. 93 Pts - Wine Enthusiast. An elegant wine, it manages to embrace its rich fruit and still show style. There is an opulent texture, driven by ripe Merlot, yet the wine is also fresh and crisp, full of black currant fruit. Drink from 2017. 92 Pts - Wine Advocate. This well-known St.-Emilion estate has turned out a dense purple-colored blend of 84% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Super-concentrated, but not over-extracted, with an essence of blackberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruit interwoven with dusty, chalky minerality as well as a floral note, this full-bodied, rich, moderately tannic, pure, layered, impressive 2011 will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. It can be enjoyed over the following two decades. Background. Château Pavie Macquin, a St. Emilion Grand Cru Classé, is a property that has hit form in the last 10 years and is now producing first-class wines. Pavie Macquin is located east of St. Emilion village and its 15 hectares of vineyards are located on the Côte Pavie, adjacent to the vineyards of Pavie, Pavie-Decesse and Troplong-Mondot. Since 1990 Nicholas Thienpoint, of Vieux Château Certan fame, has been in charge of the vineyards. He manages the vineyards on organic lines and the estate no longer uses fertilisers, herbicides or other chemicals. The ever-present oenologist Michel Rolland is now a consultant. Pavie Macquin's wine is a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Producer The key moment in the history of the eponymous chateau Pavie Macquin comes from the famous Albert Macquin (1852-1911). From 1887 Macquin purchased the chateaux of La Serre, Peygenestou (5 hectares), Pavie-Chapus (3.7 hectares), Pavie-Pigasse (5.7 hectares) as well as others, totalling what is now Chateau Pavie-Macquin's approximately 26 hectares. An agricultural engineer, he popularised grafted plants which would save the vineyard after it was ravaged by phylloxera. He was truly a ‘man of reconstruction'. As Henri Enjalbert wrote, ‘Albert Macquin must be viewed as the grand master of the St Emilion vineyard's transformation for more than thirty years'. An advocate of Vitis berlandieri, less susceptible to chlorosis, he produced more than a million plants in 1887. He developed scientific vine plot monitoring. The chateau is now owned by his three grandchildren, Benoit and Bruno Corre and Marie Jacques Charpentier, as well as their own children. By continuing the tradition of their illustrious ancestry they demonstrate a deep attachment to this wonderful terroir. In late 1994, Maryse Barre's successor Nicolas Thienpont was made manager of it, supported in his work by Stephane Derenoncourt who had been working on site since 1990; together they have developed high-quality viticulture which has elevated the chateau to the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classe wine.
