Piper-heidsieck Brut Rose Sauvage
Description: | While Champagne prices have soared in recent months there are still a few crazy deals that bubble up; to wit we have just acquired a small parcel of Piper-Heidsieck's Brut "Ros Sauvage" which we can offer at 25% off its regular $59.98 tariff. 'The most extravagant and audacious ros in the world' were the words used by Piper-Heidsieck to describe their "Ros Sauvage" when it was launched in the early 2000s. While we wouldn't go nearly that far, there is no denying that cellarmaster Rgis Camus had created a wonderfully novel Champagne expression that contains no less than 25% Pinot Noir red wine. This Pinot Noir is nearly entirely sourced from Champagne's southernmost Aube district. As Camus has stated, 'The Aube is very good for red wines, and if we are selective with the sites, pruning and ripeness, we get some wonderful red wines with concentration without tannins.' The result is dark rose wine that sits partway between a Champagne rose and a Coteaux Champenois rouge. Wine Spectator 93 Points - "a rich and toasty ros Champagne backed by a steely spine of mouthwatering acidity, with a satiny mousse wrapping the firm structure and carrying a finely meshed range of raspberry coulis, blood orange granita, roasted hazelnut, candied ginger and a tangy streak of salinity, which cleans the palate on the racy finish. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.". John Gilman 91 Points - "The new release of Piper-Heidsiecks "Ros Sauvage", which typically includes around a quarter of still Pinot Noir in the blend, is once again excellent. The color here is quite dark for a ros Champagne- fairly deep cherry red- and the wine has plenty of vinosity in evidence on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a deep and complex blend of cherries, orange peel, a bit of spiced meat, lovely soil tones, woodsmoke, cloves and rye toast. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a rock solid core, zesty acidity, laser-like focus, superb mousse and excellent length and grip on the vibrant and very well-balanced finish. This cuve seems to get a bit better every year! Lovely wine." |
