Kanonkop Pinotage

Kanonkop Pinotage

Pinotage

Vintage: 2016
Description: Wine maker notes Winemaking at Kanonkop follows the age-old tradition of being made in open concrete fermenters, but with a slight difference, the tanks are wide and shallow, rather high and deep. This ensures maximum skin contact. Only French Nevers barrels are used for breeding, with the exception of a few experimental barrels each year. All cellaring, bottling and labelling is done on Kanonkop. Producer Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa's most premium wines. Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by Jw Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul & Johann Krige. Kanonkop The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town. Wine Director 90 points - The nose of the 2016 Pinotage Stellenbosch has an open-knit expression with dark spicy fruits, floral tones and soft subtle oak aromas of cinnamon and vanilla. The full-bodied palate is clean and rich with a full expression of ripe blackberries and drinks like a robust Cabernet Sauvignon. The oak is evident on the palate but hasn't been overdone, integrating seamlessly into the expression. The rich blackberries and plum tones glide over the mid-palate and it finishes long and a touch spicy, with balance and precision. The 2016 Pinotage spent 18 months in 75% new and 25% second-fill French barriques. It has a clean, pure bouquet of black plum, licorice and light menthol notes that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and well-judged acidity. The oak just lends lift toward the smooth, dark-chocolate-tinged finish. Excellent. Intense but really attractive notes of ripe stems, blackberry crumble, incense, jasmine, pressed violets, bark and ivy extract. The palate's also a mouthful with chewy tannins, but it's delivered across a bed of razor-sharp acidity that brings it through to a mouthwatering finish. Really well done. Drink in 2021 Deep intense ruby plum color with a purple hue. A bold itensity of red plum, red berries and a concentration of dark chocolate, vanilla and aromatic sweet spice. Good complexity with layered flavors that will continue to develop and integrate for years to come.-Winery
