|Description:||"Aromas and flavors of warm plum cake, violet, red licorice, blackberry coulis and cherry preserves glide seamlessly along here, with just a light underscoring of alder adding texture. Features a very fine-grained finish, with lovely minerality that extends nicely. A beautiful wine.—Non-blind Pavie Macquin vertical (December 2014). Drink now through 2025. 4,165 cases made. –jm " (ws). "a noble, complex nose of flowers, beef blood, black currants, licorice, and truffles reveals surprising evolution. The full-bodied, powerful wine exhibits stunning concentration, beautiful richness, sweet tannin, and a long finish. A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (all from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard), the 2004 Pavie-Macquin is another dazzling success from the brilliant winemaking team of Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont. " (wa). "(14% alcohol; pH 3.47): Deep red. Refined aromas of ripe red cherry and strawberry jam complicated by notes of rosemary, marjoram and cocoa. Suave, rich and dense, with savory red cherry, licorice and herb flavors showing lovely balance and surprising flesh for the vintage. Finishes long and rich, with mouthcoating, polished tannins. A major success in 2004; perhaps just a touch lean at the back. The estate opted for full maturity of the grapes and risked picking in between the fall rains. For example, the cabernets were picked extremely late, between October 18 and 28. Very well done."(VM). "Flowers, licorice, espresso, spicy blackberry and plum notes start the wine, which is further improved with its mineral, fennel and black cherry palate. This could still soften and develop with a few more years. 91 points - Tasted Nov 30, 2014" (jl)|
