Mottura Poggio della Costa

Mottura Poggio della Costa

Grechetto

Vintage: 2014
Description: Dedicated a lifetime to rediscovery of indigenous grape varieties, Sergio Mottura aims to exploit the potential of a terroir that finds its fullest expression in Grechetto. Considered "one of Italy's greatest whites" by the prestigious wine guide, Gambero Rossol, Mottura's Latour a Civitella (100% Grechetto fermented in French oak barriques). was the first white wine from Lazio ever awarded "tre bicchieri". Originally from Piedmont, the Mottura family moved to Civitella d'Agliano when Sergio's uncle, Alessandro bought the estate in 1933 whilst he was working on a construction of the nearby Milan-Naples railway. Located at a strategic meeting point of 3 different regions--Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany, and close to Rome, Florence and Sienna, the estate produced wine, olive oil, cereals, and fodder. The "Poggio della Costa" went through soft pressing, preventative purification of must at low temperature, and slow fermentation at controlled temperature (18-20°C) for 15-25 days. The palate is warm, crisp and persistent with a lingering delicately tannic finish. It suits savoury dishes such as lasagne, spaghetti "alla carbonara" and "amatriciana", bean or chickpea soups, roast veal in a cream sauce, ossobuco alla milanese and, naturally, all fish: salt cod "alla livornese", red mullet and grilled tuna steaks are all particularly good pairings.
