Far Niente was founded in Oakville, California in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. Benson hired architect Hamden McIntyre, and together they worked to create an exquisite oasis in western Oakville.\r\nFar Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919. The gates closed, but the magic never truly disappeared from the property. Sixty years later, Gil Nickel bought and restored the winery and neighboring vineyard. This three-year-long labor of love put the label back on the map \u2014 and on the National Register of Historic Places. He preserved the Far Niente name \u2014 an Italian phrase which romantically translated means \u2018without a care.\u2019 Nickel hoped to recapture a bygone era when life was indeed without a care.\r\nTo this day, Far Niente is consistently recognized as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Ours is an unparalleled level of time-honored winemaking traditions. This has helped establish Far Niente as one of the world\u2019s great wine estates.\r\nAbout Bella Union Winery\r\nBella Union was founded by the partners of Far Niente to specialize in the art of blending Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The cornerstone of the blend is our 25-acre vineyard in Rutherford, along Bella Oaks Lane, a country road that was historically called Bella Union. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon in well-drained loam, and the vines range from 20 \u2013 30 years of age. Classic varietals of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot sourced from select Napa Valley vineyards complete the blend.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe best vinification begins with finding the best location. Napa Valley stands as one of the most celebrated winemaking regions in the world, and even amid such splendor, we are fortunate to sit atop 25 hallowed acres of earth that offer just the right conditions for our mission and our craft.\r\nBella Union was founded in 2012 under the provision of the established and venerated Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel wineries. Backed with the whole of their winemaking expertise and their knowledge of the Napa Valley region, we were able to secure our cornerstone parcel that yields the bulk of our unique and exciting Cabernet wine grapes. We then scout the valley to find the most complimentary flavors to create a harmonious union that redefines the standard for what fine blended Cabernet Sauvignon can be. |
