Domaine Christian Moreau Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos - Clos des Hospices" (Pre-Arrival)

Chardonnay from Chablis

Vintage: 2018
Description: 98 points Wine Enthusiast. While the nose on this wine has a rich sense of creaminess and chalk, an insistent sense of juicy Mirabelle and ripe lemon breaks through with sheer exuberance. Something fresh-faced and honest in that fruit expression seems aware of the depth and seriousness of the wine. Despite the profundity, the wine conveys an eternal sense of joy. Concentrated and generous, but also so cool and linear, the wine is wonderful. Drink by 2040. (ak) (12/2020) 95-96 points James Suckling. A monopole bought in 1904 by the Moreau family, this has east-west row orientation at the bottom of the slope. The nose is alive with very rich peaches and lemon brulée, as well as fresh apricots. The palate has a wildly rich and yet very structured feel with terrific length, power and a sizzling mineral wash at the finish. Drink from 2026. (7/2019) 95 points John Gilman. The 2018 Clos des Hospices is another outstanding wine in the making chez Moreau. The superb nose jumps from the glass in a youthful blend of pear, lemon, apple, chalky soil tones, white flowers, lemon zest and a gentle touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied, long and shows off excellent mid-palate depth, with a fine girdle of acidity, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex and very classy finish. Outstanding potential. 2025-2075. (11/2019) 94 points Decanter. This 1ha Clos within Les Clos, as it were, is located at the bottom of the slope and is shared equally with Louis Moreau. Replanted in 1987 after the frost of 1985, this is a very stylish, modern wine that uses oak to impressive effect. Rich and concentrated, with lots of texture, spice and fruit intensity, it has flavours of nectarine and vanilla and some tannic grip. Drinking Window 2021 - 2028. (ta) (7/2019) 94 points Vinous. The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru Clos des Hospices has a gorgeous bouquet of kaffir lime, lemon zest, orange blossom and just a hint of elderflower, underneath which lies a compelling sense of mineralité. The palate is built around lip-smacking salinity that gets the juices flowing, razor-sharp acidity and a precise, persistent finish that lingers. Delightful harmony and a wonderful Clos des Hospices overall. (nm) (9/2020) 92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound. Moderate wood sets off slightly riper but still appealingly fresh aromas of white flower, green fruit and tidal pool nuances. The very rich, concentrated and mouth coating big-bodied flavors are also notably powerful while delivering outstanding length and depth on the balanced finale that is a bit more mineral driven. (10/2019) K&L Notes. 93-95 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "100% in barrel then matured in tank since racking in May. A paler colour with fresh green tint. this has beautiful elegance up front, pure white fruit, then some weight at the back, all very nicely in balance and with excellent persistence. 13.2% alcohol which I suspect is just right for this vineyard." 94-96 points Antonio Galloni in Vinous: "The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices Grand Cru is vivid, nuanced and wonderfully vibrant. It is also the wine that really captures the Moreau style at its best. Lemon confit, almond, chamomile and a touch of new oak open up in a supple, silky Clos loaded with personality. Radiant and yet reserved, with mid-weight structure, the Clos des Hospices is absolutely exquisite in its beauty. The Clos des Hospices emerges from a half hectare parcel on the lower slope of the Clos hillside and is done entirely in oak." (1/2020).
