| Description: | 98 JS / 96 Rp / 95 Wci / 94 Ws / 94 De / 17 Jr. A wine, with intense spice and berry character, with hints of sweet tobacco. It changes all the time from flowers to fruit and wet earth. Full-bodied, with super fine tannins and ripe fruit. It's long and juicy with lovely fruit. Super long and beautiful, with fine tannins that last for minutes. Tight now, but juicy and gorgeous. Best ever from here. Try in 2020. - James Suckling. An inky/purple color is followed by notes of Asian plum sauce, forest floor, creme de cassis, black raspberries and a floral component that is unusual for a Margaux. A wine of exceptional intensity and purity with a full-bodied, sumptuous texture, lots of fresh vibrancy and excellent definition, this beautiful 2009 exhibits high but sweet tannin. It is more sexy than the 2005 was at a similar age, although their level of extract and concentration is relatively equal. Something about the 2009 reminds me of a Margaux version of St.-Julien's Leoville Poyferre. if that makes any sense. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. This is another fabulous effort from an estate that has been doing extraordinary work over the last 10-15 years. I enjoyed the 2009 as much as the 2005, perhaps even slightly more because while it has structure, the tannins are less aggressive and there is more succulence, flesh and texture in the 2009. - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate. The color is just starting to barely lighten. On the nose you find smoke, tobacco, cedar wood, forest floor and ripe, deep red fruits. Full-bodied, lush and silky, the wine is sweet, opulent, rich and polished, with a hit of dark chocolate, espresso, mint and dark red fruits, with perfectly polished tannins in the finish. This is starting to enter the fun stage of life, but if you can wait another 5 years or so, the oak will better integrate and you'll have a better wine in your glass.-Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider, tasted 09/2019. This is beautiful, with smoldering tar, espresso and tobacco leaf notes fully melded together, while the core of crushed plum, steeped black currant and blackberry fruit sits in reserve. A twinge of iron adds extra length and definition on the finish. Very suave. Approachable now, but with plenty of stuffing and balance for the cellar as well. Best from 2013 through 2030. 9,580 cases made.-James Molesworth, Wine Spectator. Stephen Brook-Rich oaky cassis nose, with a curious saline character that perks it up, as well as a light floral touch. Plump, suave and opulent, highly concentrated, its lavish fruit balanced by fine acidity. Tightly wound, this has plenty of drive and persistence, lifting the core of black curranty fruit. Vigorous and very long. Alun Griffiths Mw- Full, black fruit nose with notes of vanilla from new oak. Opulent on the palate but without true finesse. Crowd-pleasing, rich style, with low acidity and subdued tannin, but not profound. Oak a bit to obvious at this stage. Steven Spurrier-Finely concentrated red and black fruits on the nose, really fine vineyard expression of controlled cassis and a touch of oak. Lots of vibrancy, vigour and purity, lots of density and length, and still the Margaux elegance. A very fine wine now and will be for a long time.-Panel Tasting, Decanter. Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Just the right side of volatile but very winning and opulent. More 2009 than Margaux. A little dry and chewy for the moment. Massive volume and finish.-Jancis Robinson |
