Truchard Roussanne

Truchard Roussanne

Roussanne

Description: Roussanne is a traditional northern Rhone varietal. Cur rently, only 15-20 producers are making Roussanne in California. Roussanne takes its name from the French word "roux," meaning rouge or red because of the grapes' pink glow. In California, virtually all of the 339 acres of Roussanne come from true clones brought over by Tablas Creek and John Alban. Truchard Vineyards is a family operated winery that has been growing grapes in Napa Valley since 1973. All Truchard wines are estate grown in the Carneros Ava. The cool climate produces wines that have bright acidity and fresh fruit characteristics. Full and silky in body but also charmingly crisp, Roussanne makes a stellar blending grape. Thought to be native to the Rhone River Valley of France, and still predominantly grown there, it is responsible for some of the finest Northern Rhône white wines. Persistent aromas of exotic herbal tea, a full body nearly as complex as a red wine, and distinct apricot and honey flavors make Roussanne unique. With age, the wines gain a more oily and glycerin texture. Richer fish dishes such as salmon, lobster, crab or grilled shrimp work well with Roussanne and its blends. A meal of roast chicken with herbs and winter vegetables is also delicious. Stuffed Butternut Squash, vegetarian curry and baked brie with apricots are other ideas to pair with Roussanne based wines. Wine maker notes Floral aromas of pineapple, honeysuckle, and lychee, wi th highlights of jasmine and vanilla. The mouth is crisp, with clean flavors of pear, honeydew melon, and fresh apricot. Bright acidity provides a lengthy finish of citrus, mineral, and spice. Other text This white varietal has been traditionally associated with the Northern Rhone, where it is blended with Marsanne to make white Hermitage wines. In 1998, three acres of Roussanne were planted on the southern end of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Growing in soils composed of volcanic rock and ash, the vines benefit from the gently sloped terrain and cooler Carneros temperatures. Roussanne is a challenging grape in both the vineyard and winery. However, when done correctly it can produce an aromatic and delicate wine with the structure and finesse to age.
