Rocca Di Montegrossi Chianti Classico

Rocca Di Montegrossi Chianti Classico

Vintage: 2021
Description: Organically Farmed. This is one of the reference estates in the southern Chianti Classico region, coming from a warm part of Gaiole. Their wines are complex and robust, tending toward a medium-full body, with expressive savory fruits on the darker spectrum, baked/dusty earth accents, and a firm, lively, tangy structure. This bottling is their most traditional and pure expression of their area, with aging taking place in traditional, large wood vats for 1 1/2 years. Ideal with classic tomato-based pastas, grilled veggies and moderately aged cheeses. Decanter 93 Points - "As high temperatures in mid-August shut down the ripening of Sangiovese, Marco Ricasoli reports picking approximately a week later than usual. He also introduced a sorting table to remove dried or green berries as well any pieces of stems. His resulting annata is pristine and sophisticated. Deep violet in colour and equally youthful on the nose, it exudes wild berries, black plum, and hints of wood spice. Tangy dark red cherry fills the mouth, buoyed by rambunctious acidity and framed by suede-textured tannins. Winter mint and liquorice root linger on the finish. With admirable complexity, this outperforms its category.". Aged 11 months in glass-lined concrete vats and Allier oak vats from 54 to 56 Hl. Bottled unfiltered. The history of the Ricasoli-Firidolfi family in Tuscany is a rich tapestry of kings and statesmen, its fabric woven together with the vine. For more than 37 generations, this ancient family has cultivated grapes and crafted wines in Monti in Chianti, the "very best area" of Chianti Classico, according to Antonio Galloni. The family's roots in Tuscany began with a man named Geremia back in 1141, when the name "Chianti" had yet to be spoken and Tuscany was the scene of many a battle between warring families. The "rocca" of Montegrossi was a strategic post, high up on a plateau, providing shelter for traveling dignitaries. For centuries the family guarded the "rocca" and cultivated vines on its sunny slopes. Yet it was in the nineteenth century when Baron Bettino Ricasoli-the "Iron Baron" and future prime minister of a united Italy-created the original "formula" for Chianti Classico's blend of grapes. The "Iron Baron" was winemaker Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi's great-great-great grandfather. Today on the very same land where his forefathers grew grapes, Marco crafts peerless Chianti Classico wines according to the traditions and wisdom of countless generations.
