Garzon Balasto

Vintage: 2018
Description: James Suckling 94 Points - "Balasto, named for its perfectly draining granitic soils, is the Grand Vin of Garzn, and has already caused a sensation as the first Uruguayan wine to be sold alongside the crus classs on the Place de Bordeaux. All of the estates resources are brought to bear to usher this wine into this echelon. Very bright and aromatic with blackberry, black licorice and spice. Hints of sweet tobacco. Full body, yet reserved and extremely polished and reserved. 45% Tannat, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Marselan and 10% Petit Verdot. A new benchmark for Uruguay. Better in 2020 but amazing now.". Garzon has rapidly gained both notoriety and favoritism here at Hi-Time, so we were thrilled to be offered (only 4 6-packs!) their piece de resistance Balasto. This Super Uruguayan blend of Tannat (45%), Cabernet Franc (25%), Petit Verdot (20%) and Marselan (10%) is the first wine from Uruguay to be granted entrance into the famed Place de Bordeaux event held during the 2017 VinExpo. Balasto is a testimony to greatness and to winemaking ingenuity & finesse and joins the ranks of other non-Bordeaux notables Opus One, Almaviva, Sena, Masseto and Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin that have pierced this showcase's sphere of exclusivity. Named for the "ballast" (decomposed granite) soils that are the lifeblood terroir of Bodega Garzon consultant winemaker, Alberto Antonini and head winemaker, Garman Bruzzone have created an icon wine that will be a boon to collectors' cellars worldwide. The wine is fermented in concrete tulips (the same used at Chateau Petrus) and aged 20 months in untoasted 25 hl and 50 hl French barrels. This is a wine that sings in the glass with bright and concentrated blackberry, floral and licorice notes. The palate aligns to the nose with a polished and seductive suppleness. Notes of black forest fruit, black plum and undercurrents of sweet tobacco and spice form a core of balanced nuance and the tannins thrust forward with precision. Only a few hundred cases produced, so don't delay. The allocation at Place de Bordeaux sold out in minutes!
