Long Shadows Winery Syrah Sequel

Long Shadows Winery Syrah Sequel

From Columbia Valley

Vintage: 2017
Description: 100% Syrah. "An instant success, the 2017 Syrah Sequel bounces out of the glass with precision, power and finesse with juicy blackberry reduction and black pepper spices woven into black cherry essence and plum preserves, with hints of dried herbs, baked earth and river rock. Full-bodied, the mouth-coating sensation from this generous fruit tones shows a beautifully balanced Syrah with succulent tones of black and red fruit, black pepper and purple flowers. The wine ends with lifting tannins on the long, immaculate, slightly chewy finish. This is food-friendly and overdelivering at this price. Bravo!" (wa). "Bright ruby-red. Musky perfume of dark raspberry, black olive, bitter chocolate and brown spices, plus a subtle hint of animal fur. Silky and seamless on entry, then as much red fruits as black in the sweet middle palate, with floral and spice notes adding clarity and lift. A bit less meaty than the 2016 version but that's no complaint as this wine shows a good deal of personality as well as more delicacy and restraint. Today this wine displays the fruity side of 2017. This wine will give pleasure early but also last well." (vm). "Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and violets with cloves and black pepper. Spiced chocolate. Full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A big wine, but I love the form, structure and intensity. Drink after 2022." (js). "Put together by John Duval, the 2017 Sequel (100% Syrah fermented with 30% stems) is a ripe, sexy wine that's in the same ballpark as past vintages. Rocking notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, peppered game, licorice, and subtle chocolate all flow to a powerful, full-bodied Syrah that has good purity of fruit, ripe, chewy tannins, a bid mid-palate, and a great finish. It's a touch unevolved and in need of a year or three of bottle age, but it's a beautiful wine that will evolve for a solid 8-10 years or more." (jd). "Made in partnership with famed Australian winemaker John Duval, this wine offers aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, plum and spice, with earthy Boushey Vineyard notes providing accents. Full-bodied, chocolate and dark-plum flavors follow, with iron and earth nuances. -Sean P. Sullivan" (we). Winery Notes:. After 16 years as winemaker for Australia's iconic Penfolds Grange, John Duval came to the Columbia Valley in 2003 as the "sequel" to his life's work with Syrah. Tasting Notes:. Deep and inky in color, the 2017 Sequel Syrah offers inviting aromas and flavors of fresh blueberry, violet and a hint of cassis. Black olive tapenade and savory spice persist across the mid-palate. Multi-layered and well structured, the wine's refined texture and enticing viscosity lead to long, impressive finish. Vintage:. Budbreak was later than usual in 2017 due to a cool, wet spring, but temperatures warmed nicely for bloom. Conditions moderated in early summer before warming again in July to drive total heat accumulation a bit above average for the season. Harvest began towards the end of August, then temperatures cooled considerably in mid-September to extend hang time and allow the grapes to reach full physiological maturity without spiking sugars. The resulting wines are rich and expressive, displaying excellent acidity and structure that is reflective of the quality of the vintage. Winemaking:. Hand-harvested grapes underwent a variety of fermentation techniques to produce a wide spectrum of flavors. One-third of the Syrah was whole-cluster fermented to boost viscosity. Several lots underwent an Australian technique known as "rack and return" that requires draining the tank twice daily and gently putting the juice back over the top of the skins to extract color, soft tannins and aromatics without imparting harsh tannins. Finally, a small portion of the grapes underwent submerged cap fermentation to enhance structure and mouthfeel. The finished wine was aged 18 months in all French oak barrels, 60% new. Vineyards:. The 2017 Sequel is a blend of diverse vineyards that contribute distinct characteristics to the finished wine. Yakima Valley's Boushey Vineyard, notable for its bright, elegant character, comprises one-third of the blend, as does Bacchus Vineyard. Grown on a south-facing block planted in 1993, Bacchus Syrah adds black fruit character and richness. Red Mountain Syrah gives the wine its structure and backbone. Finally, a small amount of Shiraz clone grapes from Sonnet Vineyard at The Benches contribute dark cassis aromas and flavors.
