The site features tightly spaced vines and is planted to 33 acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah and sits on the Santa Lucia Highlands Bench adjacent to the Garys' Vineyard. The clonal material planted in the loamy, rocky soil is very diverse and features over a dozen of the most renowned heritage selections from California and Burgundy in pursuit of the finest wine quality. Gary Pisoni planted his estate vineyard, now one of the regions most iconic sites, in the early 1980s as a passion play. Dark, layered and mysterious, the 2021 is captivating from the first taste. Succulent plum, blackberry, lavender, spice, menthol and espresso all meld together. Readers will find a rich, heady Syrah with a ton of fruit and plenty of structure. Wilder Syrah notes have not developed at this stage, and I am not sure they will.
