Henriet Bazin Brut Blanc De Noirs Grand Cru
Description: | The villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay have long been regarded as the twin supernovas of the Montagne de Reims. With their expansive, south facing slopes the Pinot Noir grapes of these villages achieve a consistently lush, red berry flavor signature that is hard to resist. On the other hand, the twin villages of Verzy and Verzenay with their mostly north facing vineyards have a cooler mesoclimate that results in a longer, more challenging growing season. However, their Pinot Noir vineyards in the right hands- that is, with proper yield management and a latter picking schedule- can produce classically sleek, highly fragrant and well-structured Champagnes with a dark berry fruit profile. One of the few north-slope grower-producers with the will and the savoir-faire to bring out the terroir's full potential is Masion Henriet-Bazin. In 1991, Marie-Nolle Henriet-Rainon became the 5th generation to take the helm of the family's domaine, having succeeded her father Daniel Henriet- who still contributes his sage farming advice. Marie-Nolle believes in hand tilling of the soil and the use of cover crops to nurture the soil and to curb erosion. She recently achieved the Hve (High Environmental Value) status for her vineyards. Her current Blanc de Noirs is 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from the estate's parcels in Verzy and Verzenay. With an average age of thirty-five years, the family's Pinot Noir roots run deep beneath the surface silt to access the area's chalky sub-soil, permitting a profound extraction of mineral influence as the vines have to work harder to get the nutrients they need. This bottling's blend is based on the 2019 harvest complexed with the addition of 30% Solara Reserve- which was started by Deaniel Henriet in 1968. The wine aged for more than three years on yeast and was disgorged in the fall of 2022 with a deft dosage of 6.5 grams/liter. We were instantly smitten by this (new to us) charmer's floral aromatics, mouth-watering plum/black cherry flavor core and overall elegance. Wine Enthusiast 92 Points - "Parcels of Pinot Noir grown in northeast-facing vineyards on the Montagne de Reims give richness while also a structured cool character that brings out the wine's fruitiness and texture. This is a finely poised Champagne that is ready to drink." |
