History: Nathan Nearest Green, known in his hometown of Lynchburg, Tennessee as Uncle Nearest, was formerly enslaved and the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. He was known to have perfected "The Lincoln County Process," where whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal prior to being aged in charred oak which is a Tennessee legislative requirement to be called a "Tennessee Whiskey" on the label. Uncle Nearest was the man who taught Jack Daniel the whiskey-making process, and he is finally credited as the first master distiller for Jack Daniel's. |
