Just inland from the chaos of Naples, Taurasi is one of the most idyllic and historic wine regions in Italy. Winemaking has been a popular thing to do since at least 800 B.c. in this elevated hill-country, which was an ancient seabed that was pushed up by the region's dramatic volcanic activity. Today, Taurasi is considered prime territory for Aglianico, an ancient red variety known for making wines of robust elegance, with wild, savory aromas, and an appetizingly dry finish; in fewer words, a quintessential fine Italian red !. It might have been a different story if not for the heroic efforts of Antonio Mastroberardino ! After taking over his family's estate in the 1960s, he ignored the recommendations to replant vineyards with commercially popular French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. By instead championing the unique varieties of the region, like Aglianico, he helped lift the region not only out of obscurity, but onto the world stage! Radici ("roots") is an appropriate name for the wine, both for the Mastroberardino family's history in the area that goes back to the 1700s, and for the focus on the region's traditional varieties. Today, Antonio's son, Piero, represents the tenth generation to head the winery!. Mastroberardino's irresistible 2016 "Radici" Taurasi Riserva features an expressive mix of ripely-toned red and black fruits, dark spices like licorice root, pepper and incense, barrel notes of cedar, clove and dark cocoa, along with wilder, outdoorsy tones of camphor, tobacco leaf and musk. The firm structure of grainy tannins and core of acidity are enrobed in the fruit, giving the wine an inner liveliness and flow, and a finish that balances a dry richness with a lifted tangy berry and citrus vibrancy. Some great dishes for this marry flavor-rich meats, legumes, herbs and some acidity, like lamb shank with lemony lentils or a rich Neapolitan rag !. #5 Wine Spectator Top 100 2023. Wine Spectator 95 Points - "a focused and fragrant red, leading with hints of pencil shavings, violet, tobacco and citrus that accent flavors of blackberry and black cherry fruit. This is refined and supple, fresh with lively acidity, but also shows weight and concentration, with sculpted tannins emerging on the mineral- and spice-laced finish. Drink now through 2036. 1,750 cases made, 833 cases imported.". Vinous 96 Points - "a rich and darkly inviting blend of plum sauce, clove, cocoa and camphor makes the 2016 Taurasi Riserva Radici impossible to ignore. This is pure class, pliant and enveloping on the palate, with silken waves of ripe red and black fruit guided by brisk acidity. Citrus and inner herbal tones add tremendous depth. The 2016s regal tannins come forward through the close, framing the experience with youthful poise without slowing its momentum, leaving chalky mineral tones and nuances of nectarine to linger. The balance here is something to behold. Bury this beauty deep in the cellar. " - Eric Guido, 04/23
