| Description: | Infatuated with Bugundy, both red and white, Luigi Moio's wines resemble to style of Domaine Leflaive: classically balanced and quietly expressive, with an intense purity of fruit and a light polish; wines that are understated until you allow them to fully breathe. Here we have Aglianico from around the Mirabella Eclano area of Irpinia, the elevated land inland from Naples, formed by the lifting of an ancient seabed by the tumultuous volcanic activity (which also makes this a beautifully verdent area to visit). This displays the rawer, less polished end of Quintodecimo's red lineup, with a youthful primacy: floral and fruity on the attack, then the dark spice (pepper or incense spice & licorice root) and wild herbs ground it. While Aglianico can be quite tannic and funky on the finish, Quintodecimo extracts gently from the skins and uses seasoned, small French oak barrels (as in Burgundy) to gently polish the rougher edges. As a result, there's a savory, but clean and elegantly tapered, finish that gently grips the palate, making it a versatile food wine. Aged 1 year in French barriques, 50% new.
