Matetic Vineyards EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc

Matetic Vineyards EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc

Vintage: 2017
Description: Tasting notes This wine is a very pale yellow color, with light green hues. The nose is complex and delicate, with aromas of citrus and tropical fruit such as mango, papaya, cherimoya and lime peel, intertwined with herbs notes. Refreshingly crisp on the palate, with concentrated fruit flavors and a fresh, salty acidity that finishes with a crisp, lingering minerality. Rating The Eq Coastal Sauvignon Blanc from Casablanca was produced with grapes grown at 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean on decomposed granite and mica soils. It fermented in stainless steel, barriques and concrete amphorae where it's kept with lees for four months, which represents the essence of what Matetic Sauvignon Blanc is about: citric, salty, with a balanced palate and good persistence. It's subtle and elegant, a restrained style of Sauvignon, more about the place (sea breeze, granite) than the variety. Beautifully textured, in the style of a Sancerre, with no influence from the oak, with a notable absence of herbal notes, as they avoided the clones that lend those aromas. Very food friendly, this wine is about the palate rather than the nose. Awesome value. (Wine Advocate). Producer notes The story of the Matetic Winery began in 1999 when the Matetic family decided to diversify their business ventures and enter the world of wine. Confident in the virtues of the climate and soils in the Rosario Valley, they planted 222 acres of vineyards. The Matetic vineyards are located in the Rosario Valley, a subdivision of the San Antonio Valley. This completely enclosed valley is perpendicular to the ocean and features ideal climatic and topographic conditions for both red and white wines. The vineyards are certified organic by Ceres GmbH and follow Biodynamic practices as well. All wines are hand-picked and estate bottled. The Eq stands for Equilibrium.balance - the focus of this line is to balance of the vineyards, the winemaking and the environment. Technical notes The grapes come from the area of Valle Hermoso (Beautiful Valley) located 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, where the vineyards are planted on slopes and benefit from the cool maritime climate, which allows each clone to develop special characteristics. The predominant solid type is decompes granite with a presence of mica on the upper tier. The deep subsoil is not heavy, allowing root penetration and balanced growing, thanks to the winerys organic and biodynamic management. A careful manual harvest was carried out at the end of March. The grapes underwent a cold soak for 6 to 8 hours before pressing under a layer of inert gas, preserving the grapes aromatic potential. Fermentation was conducted under controlled low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in contact with fine lees for four months. Fifteen percent was fermented in concrete amphora vessels (eggs) and neutral oak barrels to enhance the mineral notes, texture and mouthfeel of the final wine.
