Christian Moueix explained that 2011 was the first vintage where the harvesting was organized here to target old vines of a similar age to be picked together, as he went along with the harvesters pointing out which parcels to pick this year. As he noted, "it is pretty difficult for even a well-trained harvesting team to be able to tell the difference between a forty and a seventy-five year-old vine, but each can reach optimal ripeness at slightly different times, so it was important to help them differentiate between various ages of old vines in the vineyard at Bélair-Monange this year." Having done so, Monsieur Moueix is confident that the 2011 Bélair-Monange is the finest wine he has yet produced from this superb estate. The brilliant nose offers up a cool and classy mélange of red and black cherries, a bit of raspberry, menthol, a touch of tobacco leaf, nutskin, utterly refined soil tones and a very suave and discreet base of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and tight, with a very soil-driven personality, a rock solid core, superb focus and balance and a very long, ripely tannic and laser-like finish. This is unequivocally one of the wines of the vintage this year! (Drink between 2025-2075) We 95 Wine Enthusiast, May 2012 (we93-95 points) Barrel sample. The wine shows dryness and concentration, with a core of austere tannins. Its juicy character slowly emerges. Nm 93 Neal Martin's Wine Journal, May 2012 (nm91-93 points) The 2011 Belair-Monange is a little more thrust on the nose compared to the more feminine Magdelaine. It offers a red fruit profile with floral aromas, the creamy oak a little more pronounced but not. (nm91-93 points) The 2011 Belair-Monange is a little more thrust on the nose compared to the more feminine Magdelaine. It offers a red fruit profile with floral aromas, the creamy oak a little more pronounced but not obfuscating the sense of terroir emanating from the glass. Over five minutes it attains wonderful cohesion and purity. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins on the entry. It has a lovely balance with tensile tannins; poised and refined with a lovely build towards the finish that has good weight and sinew. All focus and finesse. Ws 93 Wine Spectator, March 2017 Tightly focused, with a fresh core of dark cherry and currant notes, driven by a strong chalk accent before slightly austere tannins take over on the back end. Light blood orange and tobacco details are starting to emerge. Best from 2021 through 2030. 1,400 cases made. –jm JS 93 jamessuckling.com, February 2014 Lots of ripe-strawberry character with raspberry undertones. Full body with round, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. This is very special for the vintage. Impressive. Try in 2017. Production has been cut back and the selection process has become deeply serious as just over 1,500 cases. The dense ruby/purple-colored 2011 offers gorgeous aromas of kirsch, crushed rock, raspberries and subtle oak are followed by a medium-bodied, concentrated mouthfeel that suggests low yields and impeccable winemaking. A star of the vintage, it should be forgotten for 4-5 years and drunk over the following two decades. 92+ - Robert Parker Dc 92 Decanter, March 2019 This was the last vintage that Belair Monange and Magdelaine were separate properties, and ironically this wine was made in the Magdelaine cellars because work was ongoing at Belair. This is a gorgeous wine with clear. This was the last vintage that Belair Monange and Magdelaine were separate properties, and ironically this wine was made in the Magdelaine cellars because work was ongoing at Belair. This is a gorgeous wine with clear minerality and energy - a lyricism that shows the benefits of limestone in a dry year like 2011. The tannins are a little more angular than the 2010 but there's so much to enjoy in the softer raspberry and redcurrant flavours and peony edging. It's certainly beginning to open up for drinking, particularly if given a few hours in a carafe.
