Description: | Fall is an ideal time for bold reds that combine brooding aromas with vivacious mouthfeels, and Tuscany's Gran Selezione Chianti Classicos offer some of the finest for the price! These Sangiovese-driven wines from the storied swath of hills between Florence and Siena are made from a selection of an estate's best fruit, and are aged the longest before going on sale. Rocca di Montegrossi's newly arrived 2019 "San Marcellino" Gran Selezione takes things to another level!. A benchmark estate for Chianti Classico, Rocca di Montegrossi lies in one of the region's most highly-regarded areas, near the town of Monti in the region's warmer south. Astonishingly, the land has been owned by the Ricasoli-Firidolfi family since the 8th century A.d., with a fortress that served various factions throughout Tuscany's history! One of the family members, Bettino Ricasoli, not only helped unify Italy in the 1800s, but was the first to lay out official winemaking guidelines for Chianti, with noble Sangiovese front and center. We can thank today's proprietor, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, for bringing the winemaking into the modern era, ensuring the family is known for many more years to come. Made from older vines in their organically farmed San Marcellino vineyard, Rocca di Montegrossi's Gran Selezione approaches the style of Brunello di Montalcino in its power and structure. Along with Sangiovese, it includes a bit of Pugnitello, a rare native variety that complements Sangiovese with its fleshy dark fruits, leather and earth notes. With the long and balanced 2019 growing season, the wine is complex, with a firm and lively structure that gives form and flow to its dense, darkly-toned core. The classic, warm tones of iron-rich earth, leather, cured tobacco and soft Amarena cherry are awash in fresh, 'energetic' accents of purple flowers, crunchy-ripe dark berries and a mouthwatering crushed rock minerality. The wine is aged for nearly 2- years in a combination of small and large French oak barrels, which rounds the edges, and contributes notes of woodsy spices. With its still-youthful intensity and grip on the finish, this is a wine that slowly reveals itself with time in the glass, and shines with dishes like red wine braised meats, rich & tangy rag, and thick steaks!. Wine Spectator 97 Points - " Violet, black currant and black cherry aromas and flavors are at the heart of this supple and energetic yet elegant red. Vibrant and linear, with a firm line of tannins and terrific length on the iron-tinged finish. Ends with fruit, mineral and spice notes, showing solid grip. Sangiovese and Pugnitello.". 87% Sangiovese & 13% Pugnitello |
