Leoville Poyferre was one of the first Chateaux in Bordeaux to begin producing wine in the Medoc, along with Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour. In 1855, Château Léoville Poyferré became a Second Grand Cru Classé. When owner Alexandre de Gascq died Chateau Leoville was one of the biggest estates in Bordeaux at 200 hectares.
