Description: | Schild Estate Wines are created with an authenticity and passion that comes from generations of a family who have made their home in the Southern Barossa. In 1866 Gottfried and Louise Schild sailed from Hamburg, Germany, to Port Adelaide, Australia, and eventually settled in Point Pass in 1868. In 1922 Johann Hugo Berhard (Ben) Schild married Freda (Alma) Schutz. They had eight children with Ed Schild being the youngest of the bunch. Ben & Alma move to the Barossa Valley in 1952 and purchased the first of the Schild Estate Vineyards. Then tragically in 1956 Ben Schild dies suddenly, leaving 16 year old Ed to take over the family business of growing and selling grapes. Remarkably it took until 1998 for Ed to say "Let's make a little bit of our own wine" when he gathered the family and threw this idea out into the room. Using grapes grown on vines which had been cared for by the Schild family for generations, the first bottle of Schild Estate wine was produced in 1998 and the Schild Estate wine label was born. This wine is made of grapes from the Narrow Road Vineyard, which sits high on the hills behind the township of Rowland Flat. The vines grown adjacent to the original Schild homestead that was purchased and settled by Ben and Alma Schild in 1952 on what was historically known as ‘Narrow Road'. Look for inviting notes of creamy freshly scraped vanilla pods and a melange of dark compote fruit draws the drinker in to discover more. Once in the mouth, flavours of blood plums and blackberries are supported by classic Shiraz notes of coffee bean and subtle pepper spice. There is a depth and chewiness to the palate which hints at the quality of fruit, but also a brightness and vitality that is derived from the elevated location of the vineyard site. The fruit rolls out though the back of palate all the while encapsulated by a well resolved tannin frame which will soften over time in the cellar. Hand harvested and then crushed into traditional open top fermenters, the wine undergoes pre-fermentation cold soak and is then either gently pumped over or punched down by hand according to winemaker specifications so as to obtain optimal colour and retain complex fruit flavours. Additional post fermentation maceration usually occurs before the wine is then drained and pressed to barrel. Free run and pressings are usually kept seperate and combination of new and aged oak are barrels for maturation of between 18-24 months. The wine is then prepared for bottling with some seeing some further time in bottle prior to release. Made of 100% Shiraz in the region of Barossa Valley, South Australia, Narrow Road Vineyard.
