Penfolds Grange Shiraz, South Australia

From Germany

Vintage: 2012
Description: If you are looking for a gift for either a wine aficionado or a person who insists on the very best, a gift that will make a statement that you are knowledgeable and dead serious, look no further. Truly an iconic wine, this is one of the world's best red wines - no argument. It is probably the best red wine we have to sell in the entire store. A blend that changes every year, this is famous for aging for up to fifty years, but is enjoyable young with a proper decant and some patience - 2012 is 98% Shiraz, 2% Cabernet. I have been lucky enough to have tried another vintage of this amazing wine and it is on my list in the top three wines I've ever tasted – off-the-charts depth and complexity. The vintage I had was about 10 years old when I tried it and it was very youthful – this wine is meant to be aged for the long haul. Unfortunately, I was not able to taste this wine so here are the wineries notes: "Nose: Unmistakably, it is what it is. In a word, Grange. (Almost) all unleashed immediately upon the first splash into the glass – exuberant, lifted, flamboyant. An aromatic ‘multi-cultural' chromatogram brazenly unfolds: First, enticing barrel ferment formics and balsamics, spliced with soy, tomato puree, black olive and liquorice (Dutch?). Then, the exotics - wafts of tiramisu/mascarpone/zabaglione (Italy?), replete with freshly roasted hazelnut and ground coffee beans (Kenya?). Palate: Fresh and refined. Nervy. Red liquorice, gravy reduction flavours and black olive tapenade to the fore. And then, just so much more! Where to start? Compelling depth - weighty/voluminous/fleshy - structurally complete and even throughout. A radiant inner sheen, yet still assertive – a film encrusted with dusty, softened tannins that coat tongue. Great length. A loss of innocence, as sculptured oak (purity/clean) and a boundless array of red fruits, congeal into a darkened pool of (un)known and (un)savoury delights! Unashamedly and quite blatantly The wine of this year's Penfolds 2016 new releases! Enough said. Peak Drinking: 2018-2055". An Australian Heritage icon - arguably its most celebrated, most powerful expression of the yearly blend Complex with fresh dark fruits, balsamic and soy notes, black olives, licorice. Weighty, grand, sculpted. Pair with Beef, lamb!
