Rovellotti Costa del Salmino Ghemme Riserva

Vintage: 2017
Description: The Rovellotti family has been producing exceptional wines in the small fortified town of Ghemme since at least the late 15th century. Their devotion to tradition is evident in their winemaking process, which takes place in a network of underground cellars filled with decades-old botti (large wooden barrels), located within Ghemme's Ricetto, a 10th-century walled compound originally built for protection during times of war. Antenello Rovellotti proudly notes that of the fewer than 200 people who bear the family name worldwide, 66 live in and around Ghemme, a testament to their deep roots in the region. This dedication extends beyond the cellar, as Antenello has worked since the 1980s with the University of Milan to restore the natural balance of his lands and aims to eventually eliminate chemicals from their viticulture. The family's 15 hectares of vineyards are located in the Baraggiola subzone, Ghemme's southernmost area, spread across four key parcels: Valle d'Enrico, Valplazza, Chioso dei Pomi, and Costa del Salmino. These sites, historically recognized for their prime conditions, are planted with Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Erbaluce grapes. Their flagship Ghemme wines, including the Ghemme Riserva, reflect a deep connection to the land and showcase the unique qualities of the Alto Piemonte. The Rovellotti family's wines continue to stand out as some of the finest in the region, offering a captivating expression of both tradition and terroir.
