Segura Viudas Brut Cava
Description: | Keeping good on my New Year's resolution to drink more sparkling wine means that I have to find bubbly that is not only delicious, but affordable. Cava is the clear choice. The non-vintage Brut Reserve from Segura Viudas, made from indigenous Spanish grapes, undergoes second fermentation in the bottle, is aged for 15 months, and is a fantastic value - even at full price. Aromatic and elegant, I find notes of citrus, Asian pear, hints of flower and a touch of biscuit. The finish is dry and refreshing. While my resolution seems simple enough, there is still the misconception that something momentous has to happen to drink wine with a bubble. Maybe we are making this harder than it needs to be. Some thoughts – start by using a regular wine glass. Flutes, while lovely, are a bit too precious for every day and a bigger bowl helps bring the aromatics front and center. Next, pair with anything salty (read potato chips), creamy (brie smeared on baguette, homemade or store bought mac-n-cheese, coconut curry), or crunchy (anything fried – chicken is especially good). Last, open one up on a regular old Tuesday night and toast to nothing in particular. - Noelle Starr |
