Petrolo Valdarno De Sopra Galatrona

Vintage: 2019
Description: Only made from Merlot, Galatrona is one of the most awarded wines of the estate. Wine of great structure on the palate and widly aromatic on the nose. Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship. Wine Spectator 97 Points - "a deep well of blackberry, black plum and chocolate marks this monumental red. There is austerity, but also great concentration of fruit, mineral and wild herbs, with great energy and plenty in reserve.". Wine Advocate 97 Points - "Made with organic Merlot grapes, the Petrolo 2019 Galatrona is soft and luscious, spreading evenly over the palate with elegance and sweeping intensity. The bouquet shows dark fruit, black cherry and sweet prune. Those dark fruit tones are woven into pretty layers of spice, leather and perfumed tobacco. I like the tight, compact, yet fundamentally rich quality that is part of the mouthfeel in this important vintage. This wine could be considered a bit lighter and more ethereal compared to recent past releases, but I found that all the wines in this batch of new releases go in this same direction.". James Suckling 99 Points - "Blackberries and black cherries with lavender and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with velvety, chewy tannins, yet the fruit is very intense with vibrancy and energy. Muscular, yet agile. Pure and poised. A unique definition of merlot in Tuscany.". Galatrona is one of the world's greatest expressions of Merlot, and often draws comparisons to the Right Bank Bordeaux collectible Petrus and notable Super Tuscans such as Masseto, but sells at a fraction of the price of these other wines. Robert Parker practically fawns over Galatrona writing, "It offers additional evidence that outside of Pomerol, the world's finest Merlot is produced in Tuscany." Proprietor Luca Sanjust sources Galatrona from his 3-hectare, rugged hillside vineyard outside of Chianti Classico. Galatrona is absolutely stunning with layers upon layers of rich flavors evolving in the glass.
