Description: | 99 De / 98 Jm / 97 Bh / 97 Vm. The mature vines in the domaine's immense holding (5.56ha of old vines) have given us a wine with the youthful, plummy exuberance of Chambolle but with added precision and depth, revealing saline mineral notes, plus hints of flowers and spice. On the palate, the silky texture initially beguiles, and with time the firm structure and long finish become evident. Ageing in 35% new casks helps the wine retain an admirable purity of fruit. The 2020 vintage was the last vinified by François Millet, who took his retirement at a high point in his career.--Charles Curtis Mw, Decanter. Dark purple, rich and sold, a little reduction but obviously a huge wealth of fruit. This is not showing all the detail yet but is clearly not going to be just a monolith. Quite an extraordinary weight yet all beautifully harnessed, and with an aftertaste of extraordinary dimensions. The only wine in this flight that absolutely delivers. More red fruit than black, but both are present and seamlessly interweaved. The aftertaste is what really confirms the nobility. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: September 2024.--Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. Tasting note: This too is so densely colored that it is opaque. As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it's less expressive, more complex and more densely fruited as well. There is even better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the chiseled, hugely long, impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. Don't Miss --Allen Meadows, Burghound. The 2020 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a wine I was not sure about from barrel, but it certainly proves its mettle with a stellar showing here. This was Vincent Millet's final vintage. It is a lucid ruby/purple in color. This is opulent and ripe, possibly later-picked, a soupçon of exotic fruit - cassis and boysenberry jam, crushed violet and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with iodine-tinged black fruit. This is a bold, assertive "statement wine" that lacquers the mouth, but it doesn't quite have the grace or intellect of its peers. Perhaps that will develop with bottle age? There's a lot packed into this wine, and I strongly suspect it will be applauded with time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. -- Neal Martin, Vinous Media. |
