Massolino "PARUSSI" Barolo
Vintage: | 2016 |

Description: | We have some 2016 Barolos that belong in your cellar (or wine fridge) before they disappear! They come from the historic Massolino estate, which has reached a new level of notoriety in the last few years thanks to some great vintages and a devotion to continual improvement. Most recently, the winery was featured prominently in Wine Spectator's Top Wines of 2020 list. But it's the more limited single vineyard releases that best show the great power, depth, and vivacity that Massolino has channeled from the idyllic 2016 vintage. These are their " grand crus !". The Serralunga d'Alba estate has been family-run since 1896, and as they grew into their roles as growers and winemakers with each passing decade, they accumulated some great vineyards (often referred to as crus, a French term used when talking about prime sites). As Nebbiolo is one of those varieties that reflects vineyard differences most vividly, it became vital for wineries to bottle their best vineyards to showcase this. Variations aside, the wines from Massolino's sites are all full-bodied with particularly brooding tannic structure, a countering lift of vibrant acidity, and a beguiling perfume that features dark spices, tobacco, and 'crushed stone' or iron-ore. While they will all benefit from some additional aging, weve listed the wines in rough order of approachability if you choose to try them sooner. As always for powerful, young Barolos like these, we suggest aerating for several hours before serving and partner them with a rich, flavorful meal!. Wine Advocate 96 Points - "Of the four single-vineyard [Barolo] made by Massolino, the 2016 Barolo Parussi is the only one with fruit from Castiglione Falletto. This wine is elegant and tight, and it shows a superb level of Nebbiolo precision. aromas of wild berry, earth, tobacco, licorice and dusty limestone come into startling focus. Parussi adopts a direct and linear approach with fine and polished tannins. In a portfolio that so closely monitors the taste profile of Serralunga d'Alba, this wine is the delightful outsider.". Wine Spectator 95 Points - "Plum, black cherry and floral notes are framed by cigar box, eucalyptus, tar and iron in this intense, smoldering red. Right now it's a struggle between the expressive fruit and muscular tannins, so give it a decade at least before pulling the cork. Best from 2025 through 2050.". Wine Enthusiast 95 Points - "Pipe-tobacco, scorched earth and underbrush aromas mingle with whiffs of camphor and dark-skinned berry on this full-bodied red. It's firmly structured, featuring raspberry compote and licorice flavors framed in assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish. Youthfully austere and tightly wound, it needs several more years to fully integrate.". Antonio Galloni's Vinous 95 Points - "The 2016 Barolo Parussi is the most overt and fruity of the 2016s. That is not a bad thing at all, as it gives the wine striking immediacy and mid-palate sweetness. Succulent red and purplish berry fruit, spice and mint come together in the glass. Silky, floral and medium in body, the Parussi captures all of the sensuality that is typical of the Barolos of Castiglione Falletto. Best of all, the Parussi will drink well earlier than the wines from Serralunga will." |
