Bodegas Toro Albala Don Px Convento Seleccion Pedro Ximenez Sherry

Vintage: 1968
Description: Hi-Time's Top Sherry Wines of 2024. Bodegas Toro Albala, located in Spain's Montilla-Moriles region, is thought by those in the know, as one of the best Sherry producers in the world, with their extensive selection of older vintages that date back at least 50 years. These complex, profound works of art would not have been possible without Antonio Sanchez, Toro Albala's master blender, winemaker, and all-around maestro. Because of his ability to see future promise in vintages and his talent and guidance in choosing the appropriate temperature for these wines, he is regarded as one of Spain's top winemakers. All of the Toro Albala dessert wines are made of the Pedro Ximenez grapes, which are laid out and sun-dried on mats to concentrate the sugars. The wines are virtually black, viscous as motor oil and packed to the gills with flavor. As years pass, a brownish tint comes forth. Note that these wines are bottled directly from the oak cask and have not been subjected to any fining additives or filtration techniques. The presence of fine lees in these natural wines doesn't compromise their enjoyment. Also, there is virtually no time limit for wine storage, as these wines only improve with age even after they have been uncorked. All wines come in a keepsake gift box with a certificate of authenticity. Wine Advocate 94 Points - "Going up the ladder of age, concentration, complexity (and price), the 1968 Don Px SelecciĂłn aged in American oak butts for some 47 years before bottling, and was never blended with any other vintage. The wine has 340 grams of unfermented sugar and higher acidity given its age, as evaporation in barrel concentrates everything. This is somehow less dense and more pungent than the other old sweet wines, with more spices, lots of cinnamon and cocoa powder. It's more fluid, somehow lighter, and with some notes reminiscent of oloroso and even amontillado. There were 6,900 liters of this wine, which was bottled in various formats, including magnums, three and six liter bottles. The price is for a regular bottle."
