Description: | A former musician, Shalini Sekhar pivoted from her Master's Degree in Flute and Piccolo Performance to a career in wine. After completing her studies at Fresno State University in Enology and Viticulture, she began her journey into winemaking, marrying the same combination of art and science that fueled her passion for music. This junction in her career inspired the name of her brand; Ottavino is the Italian word for piccolo. Her experience with boutique producers and Pinot Noir started at Williams Selyem. What followed was a series of exciting roles with small clients where she worked to execute their visions for their boutique brands, beginning with Copain Custom Crush (now Punchdown Cellars), then Bluxome Street Winery, Roar, Waits-Mast Family Cellars, Furthermore, Neely Wine and several other small brands. In 2020, Shalini launched her small brand under the Ottavino label, where she explores the delights of Austrian varietals Grüner Veltliner and St. Laurent. She was introduced to us through a mutual friend, and it only took one sip of her Grüner to capture our hearts! The Alfaro Family Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains Ava Corralitos area is less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean. The site is defined by sandy soils and a maritime climate that cools the vines each night and helps the fruit retain acidity. The fruit was fermented in stainless steel and aged in tank for six months. The omission of oak was intentional; by eliminating oak from the aging program, Shalini could keep the aromatics and texture very linear and crisp. Notes of white nectarine, sweet mint, and lime pith dominate the palate. The texture is framed with a refreshing acidity and flavors of underripe pineapple, white peach, sweet tarragon, and freshly crushed fennel seed. This Grüner is a versatile wine. Pair it with fresh veg, sushi, or a simple roast chicken. It will be your wine of the summer! - Acme Fine Wines |
