Rudy Von Strasser\u0026rsquo;s journey into winemaking actually began at the University of New Hampshire while studying agriculture. His goal was to be \u0026ldquo;The King of Hard Cider\u0026rdquo; \u0026mdash; he even wrote\u0026nbsp;his thesis on hard-cider production. Deciding to travel\u0026nbsp;the country for research, Rudy took up a job at Robert Mondavi Winery\u0026nbsp;with intention to take tips-and-tricks from the wine industry to apply to cider production. It was a year-long job with an unintended consequence.\u0026nbsp; He accidentally fell in love with wine instead. \n\n. Like so many winemakers before him, Rudy then enrolled in the famed Enology program at Uc Davis \u0026mdash; the west coast mecca for wine education. However, unlike anyone before him, Rudy took a chance and wrote a letter to Eric de Rothschild (of the world-famous Ch\u0026acirc;teau Lafite-Rothschild) asking for an internship for a harvest. He became the first American to receive this internship and spent the 1985 harvest working at the Ch\u0026acirc;teau. When he returned, Rudy worked at Trefethen in the cellar and then Newton Vineyards as the assistant winemaker under John Kongsgaard. These experiences would end up building the winemaking foundation Rudy would use for Von Strasser Winery and its distinct style. \n\n. Summiting a New Napa Valley Ava: Diamond Mountain District \n\n. In 1990, Rudy and Rita Von Strasser found the perfect site\u0026nbsp;to build a winery, as well\u0026nbsp;as live and raise their three children. It was in northern Napa Valley, neighboring Diamond Creek \u0026mdash; an area known for producing\u0026nbsp;exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. When the Von Strassers purchased the\u0026nbsp;30-acre property, it\u0026nbsp;was formally Roddis Estates \u0026mdash; home to 6 existing acres of Cabernet. Over the next 30 years, the Von Strasser family worked painstakingly and passionately to showcase their little piece of paradise. That work would include christening Diamond Mountain District\u0026nbsp;as a Napa Ava \u0026mdash; making it the smallest, niche region in the valley. And one of its most famous for Cab. \n\n. Von Strasser Winery made its\u0026nbsp;mark in wine history\u0026nbsp;with Diamond Mountain District wines. Not only did Rudy spearhead the effort to turn Diamond Mountain\u0026nbsp;into a recognized wine region,\u0026nbsp;he assembled a core group of neighboring grapegrowers to make wines with\u0026nbsp;\u0026ndash; to unprecedented success. In those two plus decades, Von Strasser\u0026nbsp;was named\u0026nbsp;Wine and Spirits Magazine\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;Winery of the Year 13 times.\u0026nbsp; \n\n. Rudy\u0026nbsp;the Treasure Hunter \n\n. And in 2015, a new opportunity presented itself to Rudy and Rita that they were eager to jump on:\u0026nbsp;Lava Vine Winery. It was a small tasting room and winery just across the valley with its\u0026nbsp;own cult following \u0026mdash;\u0026nbsp;a fervent fan base that loved the \u0026ldquo;alternative varietals\u0026rdquo; to Cab, including Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah\u0026nbsp;and many more small-lot projects.\u0026nbsp;Rudy\u0026#39;s eyes twinkled at the\u0026nbsp;challenge. Today, the Von Strasser family\u0026nbsp;produces\u0026nbsp;Rudy, Lava Vine and Von Strasser wines. \n\n \n. \u0026quot;Von Strasser continues to be our flagship \u0026ndash; specifically, single-vineyard\u0026nbsp;Cabernet Sauvignon. While we do make many wines now, these wines are very exclusive \u0026mdash; with limited case production.\u0026quot; \n \n\n. How Angel Funding Changed Him \n\n. In 2018, Angel-funded winemakers Alexandra Farber and Ryan O\u0026rsquo;Connell met Rudy and introduced him to Naked Wines. He jumped at the opportunity to share his wines with a larger audience \u0026mdash; to spread the word about the region he had a hand in establishing \u0026mdash; and there couldn\u0026rsquo;t be a more perfect winemaker to introduce Angels to the unique mountain fruit of Diamond Mountain District. \n\n. Rudy began by introducing Angels to His Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon. When that flew off the shelf, he upped his game and introduced the Angels to some of the great single-vineyard bottlings from that Ava, Sori Bricco Vineyard and Vineyard 2131. \n\n. Realizing he could make many more wines to share with wine drinkers across the country, he developed The Strasser Collection, which is exclusively available to Angels. The Strasser Collection gives him freedom to explore new and exciting vineyard sites beyond Diamond Mountain, and varietals beyond Cabernet Sauvignon. Clearly a man with a taste for the not-yet-discovered, by supporting Rudy you\u0026rsquo;re giving him an opportunity to bottle the Next Big Thing before other winemakers catch wind of it. This is an important distinction for my wine, as sugar gets converted to alcohol at a fairly linear level, so more sugar means higher alcohol. My goal is to have a finished alcohol level in the 12.5% - 12.9% range. On top of just the alcohol, grapes grown in this area have a much higher residual acidity, which is an important part of the character of a fine Gruner Veltliner wine.","grapeDescription":"","tastingNotes":"Gruner Veltliner is like a cross between Riesling and Pinot Grigio. From the Riesling side of the spectrum, the wine has notes of terpene molecules, which impart onto the wine aromas like white peaches, black pepper and floral notes. From the Pinot Grigio side, the wine gets its structure and backbone of acidity, balanced with just a touch of residual sugar. ","openingAdvice":"I chose a screwtop for many reasons, but the two most important are quality and ease of use. A screwtop guarantees no corked character! Secondly, they are very easy to open and close again when storing the bottle for a second or third day. No need to pull off a foil and work to get that tight cork out: just screw it off and on. You will get a wine with more pure aromas and flavors, not fear of an off-bottle, and ease of use. ","ageingAdvice":"This is not a wine to age: the best parts of Gruner are its strong acidity, balance on the palate, and miner-like nose with hints of apricot and figs.
