Description: | A classic Rioja with age at an excellent price point! From Bodegas Franco Espanolas comes Rioja Bordon, coming from vineyards located in each of Rioja's 3 subzones: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Baja. Rioja Alavesa tends to produce the more delicate wines, while Alta and Baja produces more muscle bound, earthy examples. The blend going into Bordon is a perfect harmony of these styles. Like Rioja from the Baja subzone, the wine is ripe, rich and smoky on the nose with secondary notes of baking spices. Like wines from Alavesa, Bordon has a refined texture that is often missing in coarser examples at the same price. There is plenty of plum on the palate, with enough freshness preserved in the fruit to prevent the wine from having a stewed or syrup-y profile. The wine is also a crianza, which means it spends over a year aging in new American and French oak followed by an additional year in bottle. This time in barrel and bottle has helped polish the wine's edges and integrate the tannin, resulting in a sumptuous finish with a subtle spiciness. |
