Paolo Scavino Ravera Barolo

Vintage: 2019
Description: Barolo fans know the Paolo Scavino name well for their beautifully crafted wines that have an early charm and approachability compared with many "traditional" Barolos that need ages in the bottle to even consider opening. What makes their 2019 Barolos extra special was the particularly long, warm growing season in which ripening finished while temperatures were more moderate and nights grew cooler, quicker. That made for chiseled, aromatic Barolos with deep cores of beguiling fruit, flowers, balsam and spice that will stand the test of a couple decades for those so inclined! While they'll reward even just a few more years of aging, you can let them open up in a decanter for a few hours and partner with rich, savory dishes. Father and son, Lorenzo and Paolo Scavino, started this winery back in 1921, but it was Paolo's son, Enrico, who had a progressive mindset for making a new generation of Barolos. In turn, his daughters, Enrica and Elisa, have continued to make improvements in the vineyards and cellar, and the critical reviews have rewarded their efforts year after year ! They gently extract from the skins during fermentation, managing to pull out the finest quality tannins and avoid overly aggressive mouthfeels. They then age the wine for nearly two years in traditional, large oak barrels to not unduly intrude on the beautiful fruit character they worked so hard to endow it with. Over the decades, they've ended up with an extensive range of vineyards with which to work. Their plots high up on Ravera make wines that show the more finessed and lifted side to Barolo, with an excellent display of aromas sitting over an earthy-mineral, ripely red-fruited palate, with a threadwork of lacy tannins and firm core of acidity. Kerin O'keefe 96 Points - "Blue flower, perfumed berry and camphor aromas segue into flavors of strawberry compote, white pepper and Alpine herb. Its focused, vibrant and all about finesse, with bright acidity and a pristine finish. Fine-grained tannins offer lithe support. Drink 20292039. Abv: 14.5% Kerin OKeefe April 2023 kerinokeefe.com". Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points - " Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026-2046." - Audrey Frick. Wine Advocate 95 Points - "With fruit from the village of Novello, this wine is more articulate and shows clearer aromas compared to some of the other Barolos in this set of new releases. The Paolo Scavino 2019 Barolo Ravera takes a little extra time to come into focus. There is dark fruit, dried cherry, spice and some light tarry smoke. With time, the wine begins to show more complexity and nuance. Some 8,200 bottles were made."
