Bayten Chardonnay

Bayten Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Vintage: 2017
Description: Producer Bayten (formerly known as Buitenverwachting) was part of the original Constantia estate founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Dutch Colony at the Cape. One of South Africa's premier estates, this beautiful farm is situated on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg Mountain, just south of Cape Town and a few miles from False Bay. Today under the guidance of current proprietor Lars Maack, the winery has earned a reputation as the source of some of South Africa's most exquisite, mineral-tinged white wines. Bayten is a Dutch word that means "beyond expectation." Cellarmaster Herman Kirschbaum and winemaker Brad Paton continue to craft stunning wines that deliver on that promise to exhilarate the senses. Wine Advocate 89 points - The 2017 Chardonnay Bayten opens with classic aromas of spiced yellow apples, poached pears, Meyer lemon curd and elegant oak tones in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich and spicy, with a soft minerality on the mid-palate, ending with a long, lingering finish that melts with flavors of spiced oak. This 3,000-case production shows great value. (Feb 2021) Packed with rich aromas and flavors of citrus marmalade, figs and grilled nuts with subtle hints of butterscotch and spice, this powerful yet elegant bottling is reminiscent of Meursault. Beautiful floral notes and a smoky, complex minerality add to this lovely Chardonnay's intrigue.
