Description: | 97 pts Greg Sherwood Mw Oct 2021 This certainly is a deep, broody exotic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that is more reminiscent of a cool vintage Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon than anything from Bordeaux or the Cape. Opened and tasted over 4 to 5 hours, the wine hits its stride surprisingly quickly with plenty of perfumed purple flowers, violets, bruleed black berries, baked blueberry crumble, crème de cassis and a pleasing note of mocha and vanilla pod spice. Initial notes of kelp and maritime seashore salinity quickly give way to a more weighty, sensual melange of black berry compote nuances and hints of cherry kirsch liquor. While this wine certainly shows all the deft elegance and finesse we associate with the 2017 vintage, it also displays a certain extra gravitas, power and weight of fruit concentration combined with great poise, density and a seamlessly textured mineral graphite finish. This is a dark horse that will drink well on release and age deceptively well for 20+ years. 5 Stars 2022 Platter's South African Wine Guide Cape classic released a year later than Paul Sauer, needing time to show its best. 17 (95 pts) particularly fine, offering immediate complexity, with tobacco/cedar merged into sweetly delicious fruit in the context of youthful austerity & succulent tannins. Powerful, but 14.5% alcohol in balance, & 50% new oak well absorbed. A long, rewarding future assured. 95 pts Tim Atkin Mw 2021 The quality of the 2017 Paul Sauer alerted us to the fact that this was a special vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon on the farm and this wine supplies further proof. Sourced from six parcels, it has elegant 50% new wood, violet, liquorice and fynbos aromas, svelte tannins, graphite and blackcurrant leaf flavours and a volatile lift 2024-32 93 + pts Wine Advocate July 2023 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with pleasant red fruit aromas complemented by subtle oak spice. Notes of pencil shavings, graphite, blackberry, plum and dark cherry come through, creating a ripe and juicy nose. The palate is medium to full-bodied and offers balanced tannins with a refined focus on fresh oak spices. The finish is spicy with lingering hints of soft herbs and cigar box flavors. This wine is currently drinking well and has the potential to improve with time. The wine aged for two years in French oak barrels, 50% new. 72,000 bottles produced. 93 pts James Suckling Dec 2021 A ripe, aromatic red with lots of ripe black-fruit aromas, together with bay leaf, tobacco and pinewood. Medium-to full-bodied with an array of fine-grained tannins and bright, fresh fruit components. Long finish with a polished texture. Drinkable now, but better in 2023. 92 pts Vinous Nov 2021 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has a glorious, feisty bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry and cassis aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky-smooth texture and a cohesive, poised finish that is irresistible. Simply a top-class Cabernet Sauvignon. 92 pts Wine Enthusiast Sept 2021 A sweet-oak overlay graces the nose of this decadent red, expressed in notes of baking spice and raw cocoa atop black cherry and currant fruit. Hints of tilled earth and foot-crushed violets add attractive depth and complexity, though they also suggest promise of more to come as the wood mellows. The palate is tight and firmly structured, with gripping, astringent tannins that need more time to resolve and better coalesce with the fruit. Drink 2026–2031. |
