De Forville Vigneto Loreto Barbaresco

Vintage: 2020
Description: Practicing Organic Farming. DeForville's wines are an update of the traditional Piedmontese style. They combine the rugged character of old-fashioned, low-intervention winemaking with greater clarity, gnetler extraction and extensive 2-year aging in traditional Slavonian oak. This single-vineyard bottling shows the natural elegant richness of the Ovello area. Floral, with chocolatey red fruit, with a savory edge, mouthwateringly saline acidity, and tightening finish. Leave this is the decanter for an hour or so. This will be even more complex and satin-textured in 2028, so hold a bottle if you can. Sourced from the Loreto vineyard within Ovello, with marl soils (clay with limestone rocks). Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel (with temperature control) for a relatively short 2 weeks, then aged for 2 years in large 5000l Slavonian barrels. Unfiltered & unfined. The De Forville family emigrated from Belgium, settling in Barbaresco in 1860. Appropriately for the place and time, they went into the business of growing Nebbiolo, selling their wine in bulk until 1940 when they started to bottle it themselves. Today they make a relatively modest 100,000 bottles of wine a year.
