Description: | For over 370 years and with 13-family generations the Hugel family has produced beautiful classic wines of Alsace. Known today for their passion and modern outlook, the dynamic Hugel family, located in the fortified village of Riquewihr, has earned a worldwide reputation for their Alsace wines. The Gewürztraminer grape itself originally hails from northern Italy, yet it is the emblematic grape of the Alsace region due to its slow maturation with cool nights giving its full varietal expression. Dry but intensely aromatic, this is extroverted through its floral and spicy notes. Gewürztraminer is an invitation to accompany a variety of spicy Asian dishes as well as smoked salmon and strong cheeses, especially blues like France's famed sheep's milk Roquefort bleu cheese. Made from 42 year old vines, and exclusively from hand harvested grapes, these Gewürztraminer grapes are from predominantly clay and limestone vineyards, in the most favored localities in & around Riquewihr. A cool and long growing season gave this unique dry wine great finesse and unequalled intensity. The grapes were taken in small tubs to the presses, which were filled by gravity, without any pumping or other mechanical intervention. After pressing, the must was decanted for a few hours, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats (at 18 to 24°C). The wine was racked just once, before natural clarification during the course of the winter. The following spring, the wine was lightly filtered just before bottling, and the bottles then aged in Hugel's cellars. |
