Tenuta Di Monte Ficali Castrum

Description: | Castrum Monte-ficali was the original name of the early, medieval village which has been known as Castello di Montefioralle since the Renaissance. Our wine estate overlooks this unspoiled, ancient hamlet and our tasting rooms are situated in a walled garden within its walls. Castrum translates as fortress, and the distinct label is a play on this theme, being based on the decorative door of an eighteenth century cassaforte (safe). This wine is a blend of our Sangiovese with similar quantities of Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon cultivated at a smallholding near the monastery of Badia a Passignano. This is a fruity, spicy, medium-bodied wine, a wine which accompanies many foods wonderfully. Although Castrum is partially created with French or so-called "international" varietals, the tradition of blending these 3 grape varieties in Tuscany dates back to the 1800s, and to the excellent vineyards of Carmignano Docg, far, far before the invention of the " Supertuscan " wines. |
