Founded in 1975, Sottimano is one of the most highly-regarded producers in the Barbaresco region, but they give a lot of love to all of their wines. In fact, the French oak barrels in which they age this humble wine are made expressly for them by a cooperage in Burgundy. Their 2020 Barbera d'Alba is tense and concentrated, saturated with succulent blackberry and black cherry, cooling herbs, and infused with accents of incense and anise. The suave generosity wraps around a crushed stone minerality at its core, and is streamlined by the sleek, finely-knit layer of rounded tannins and Barbera's mouthwatering acidity, leading to a pleasantly dry finish. This is a not-to-be-missed Barbera that's reasonably priced and perfect for an evening of pizzas, stuffed pastas, cured meats and moderately-aged cheeses. Organically farmed. |
